Quentin Tarantino and Roger Avary’s Video Archives finds a new home on Patreon

March 31, 2025

Ad-free episodes, exclusive in-depth analyses, and a community fueled by film obsession.

A love letter to cinema

In 1983, Quentin Tarantino and Roger Avary met while working at Video Archives, a legendary video rental store in Manhattan Beach, California. This is where they forged a friendship that would lead to lifelong collaboration, most famously on their Oscar-winning screenplay for Pulp Fiction. For both filmmakers, Video Archives wasn't just a job - it was their film school, providing the encyclopedic movie knowledge that would define their careers. Decades later, Tarantino and Avary (alongside producer Gala Avary) are revisiting their roots with The Video Archives Podcast, a nostalgic revisiting into the cult classics, hidden gems, and blockbusters that shaped their cinematic vision. They primarily draw from the original shelves of Video Archives, occasionally supplementing with treasures from another iconic Los Angeles institution, Eddie Brandt's.

Since its premiere in July 2022, the podcast has become a must-listen for film buffs, offering bi-weekly episodes packed with Tarantino’s trademark enthusiasm and Avary’s razor-sharp insights. Now, with Season 2 in full swing, the team has launched a Patreon to bring fans even closer to the action.

Why Patreon?

For Tarantino and Avary, going independent on Patreon allowed them the creative freedom to explore both the formative films that shaped their careers and to unearth entirely new discoveries alongside their audience. Bringing The Video Archives Podcast to Patreon was about creating a space where they could connect directly with their fans. Here's what fans get:

Ad-free episodes: Enjoy uninterrupted analyses into films like Moonraker, Dressed to Kill, or The Thomas Crown Affair, free from ads.

Exclusive bonus content: Unlock extended discussions, never-before-heard stories from Tarantino’s early career, and curated “triple feature” recommendations. Just like they would have recommended you in the video store.

Behind-the-scenes insights: Get a peek into the creators’ process, from how they curate episodes to their takes on modern cinema.

Community connection: Engage directly with fellow film buffs and even with Quentin and Roger themselves through Patreon's chat feature.

Your ticket to the archives

Subscribing to their Patreon means:

Supporting two legendary filmmakers keeping physical media’s spirit alive.
Getting closer to the stories behind your favorite movies.
Finding your people. The ones who still argue that Die Hard is a Christmas movie.

“We never imagined that 30 years after we worked together behind the counter at Video Archives, we would be together again doing the exact same thing we did back then: talking passionately about movies on VHS,” Tarantino and Avary said in a joint statement.

The Video Archives Podcast isn’t just a show. It’s a love letter to movies, and you’re invited to join the crew.
